Argentina's team at the center of a historic legal case
Argentina's nutritionist, Luciano Spena, testified on Monday in the trial over the death of Diego Maradona. Spena visited the Argentine icon a week before his death in November 2020. The Argentina national team, currently preparing for the 2026 World Cup after a 1-0 loss to Spain on July 19, remains in the news due to this legal case that shocked the football world.
What did the nutritionist reveal about Maradona's final days?
Spena visited Maradona's home on November 18, 2020, along with clinical doctor Pedro Di Spagna, one of the accused. According to the trial, Maradona did not follow a specific diet in his final weeks. He consumed dishes like osso buco stew and shrimp stir-fry, which caused him indigestion and general discomfort on November 13.
Why wasn't an ambulance called?
Maradona's episode of discomfort was a point of debate in the trial. Despite recommendations from doctor Di Spagna and Nancy Forlini, an ambulance was not called. Nursing records indicate that Maradona had no appetite and barely ate in his final days. The last thing offered to him was ham and cheese sandwiches, which he did not eat.
Who else is being tried?
In addition to Di Spagna and Forlini, neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, nurse coordinator Mariano Perroni, nurse Ricardo Almirón, and psychologist Carlos Díaz are also being tried. All are accused of the crime of simple homicide with eventual intent. Spena, who currently works with the Argentina national team, had to reschedule his testimony due to his participation in the World Cup in the United States.
