Argentine immigrant Iliana Noeli Lick was detained by ICE in July for attempting to travel to the US to watch the Argentina vs. Switzerland quarterfinal match. She was released by police a week ago. Lick, 30, was detained at Philadelphia Airport when trying to board a flight to Kansas City. She had tickets to watch the Albiceleste in the World Cup quarterfinals. While passing through security, a woman approached her without identifying herself. Then, they took her away without further explanation. From July 11 to August 10, the date of her release, Iliana was in four detention centers across the US: from Pennsylvania to Louisiana, until she ended up in Texas and New Mexico. In Cambria County Prison, near Philly, Lick did not end up in a migrant-only center, but rather was mixed with inmates accused of all sorts of crimes. “We had to wear the striped white and black uniform, like in the movies. They handcuffed our hands and chained our legs and waist with handcuffed hands tied to the chains, unable to walk and suffering from the pain of the chains on our legs”, she detailed in an interview with CNN. ***“It feels horrible, because we are not criminals. Why did we have to go through all that process like a person who committed a crime if we are not criminals?”, she added. Lick recounted the harshness of the detention conditions, especially in Pennsylvania: “We had to take water from the faucet that was directly connected to the toilet we shared with the 12 people who were there (...) We slept with the lights on. They were giant lamps (...) and there were noises because the officers constantly entered and left”. Finally, a week ago, ICE released her. ## Why was she detained? The Department of Homeland Security assured CNN that Lick entered the US on March 17, 2023, and exceeded the six-month time limit for her type of visa. “She will remain under ICE custody pending the outcome of her immigration process. Note that a work authorization or pending application does not grant legal status in the US”, the department detailed. The Argentine denies HS: she entered the US with a tourist visa. Then, she requested an extension with USICS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services). The petition was approved, so she could stay in the US legally, she declared to CNN. After that, she requested asylum, which is still in process, and currently has a work permit and social security number. Lick works as a nanny in New York City.
